Theatre of Masculinity

T.O.M is an interactive workshop exploring behind the scenes in the "theatre of masculinity." We will utilize drama and photography as tools to understand the process by which so many men are conditioned and policed to perform hegemonic masculine roles. Participants will take part in acting out and visioning the elements of social training, practice and enforcement of male gender performance. These practices include promotion of homophobia and fear of femininity, defended by the assumption of an inherent masculine superiority and right to unearned privilege. The side effects of conditioning men in this false reality is the suppression of emotion, communication, empathy and an unwillingness to admit weakness or mistakes. That this conditioning creates a fragile male psychological state is evidenced by depression, an acting out with anger and violence towards women, and in the practice of bullying. The social conditioning and policing of male/female and masculine/feminine binaries will be shown to prevent the potential for equality and human progress and as a source of the male dominated “war culture.” Overcoming this stifling conditioning and adopting the practice of homosocial relationship building and bonding will be offered as necessary tools for anyone aspiring to peace leadership.
